West End Parish Rooms Area;
The proposal is to remove the pews to the west end and form a multi purpose area that can be used as an entrance foyer, meeting area and communal area. The new area is separated from the Nave by means of a panelled and glazed screen. A glazed draught lobby is formed to the west door. Off the new space is a Parish office, with built-in storage and glazed separating wall to the general area incorporating blinds. To the south a kitchen/servery and disabled WC is formed. To the north an office is formed with a WC. The floors are to be reformed by removing the timber platforms to the pews and forming a new concrete floor incorporating under floor heating. The tiled corridors are to remain, but the whole floor is to be carpeted over. The new area is to be heated by the under floor heating and radiators and are to be controlled separately from the heating in the main body of the Church. The lighting is by means of recessed downlighters and pendant strip lights in rooms, also switched separately to the lighting in the main body of the Church.
The Relocation of the Font;
As part of the forming of the new multi purpose area the Font is to be relocated to the east of the South Aisle. This entails the removal of 3 pews and replacement of the floor with new encaustic tiles. The area of floor where the Font is presently located will be made good.
Pew Removal to the North Aisle to the West;
The main corridor from the south door is extended to the north wall to provide symmetry, by the removal of 5 No pews and the replacement of the floor with encaustic tiles with under floor heating. A storage unit is provided under the window cill. To the east 3 No pews are removed and the floor reformed with encaustic tiles incorporating under floor heating, the area providing space for wheel chairs or push chairs. The area is designed to be symmetrical with the South Aisle reordered to provide a position for the Font
South Aisle, Nave and North Aisle;
The pews and boarded floor will be carefully removed and new under floor heating installed. There is a void beneath the existing boarded floor to enable this to be achieved without excavation. The boarded floors are to be reinstated level with corridors, eliminating the 50mm step. Heating is to be provided by means of under floor heating under the pews, convector heaters installed to the existing floor ducts and radiators in positions shown on the drawings. The tiled Aisles are to remain as existing, with pipework utilising existing ducts where possible. Lighting is to be provided with HQI metal halide lamps fixed to the wall plate within the Nave and by floodlight fixed to the wall at high level in the Aisles. Individual spotlights are provided to highlight the Font, Pulpit and Lectern. To highlight the Clerestory windows in the Nave, small spotlights are to be installed on the cills.
To the end of the Nave, 2 pews are removed and a timber framed platform formed at the same level of the Chancel. The platform provides an area for additional seating in the Choir, worship area, and can also provide an area for a Nave Altar or as a performance stage for concerts. The platform, which is to be carpeted, is designed so that it can be removed. Steps are provided from the South Aisle and Nave and a ramp from the North Aisle. The platform would be formed around the Pulpit which will be unaltered. A removable brass guard rail is proposed to provide guarding for the additional Choir seating. The platform will provide a flexible area which can be used in a number of different arrangements, which accompany this submission
The area is to remain largely unaltered, the pew and platform to the north which was installed subsequent to Scott’s work, is to be removed to allow for easy access between the Chapel and the Chancel. The quarry floor under this is to be reinstated. New lighting is to be provided by spotlights fixed to the wall plate and heating by a new radiator.
